Preparing Kids For a Hurricane

So today we were supposed to get with a Hurricane named Isaac.  School was canceled yesterday, and even though the storm had moved out into the Gulf of Mexico and didn't hit us,  they had already called to cancel school, so I got to stay home today.

Since we live in Florida, my Mom and Dad usually stock up on hurricane supplies at the beginning of hurricane season. They've both lived her for a long time and have been through lots of hurricanes, so they make sure we have all the supplies we need and we do a checklist of everything we need to have and do before any storm.
  • Batteries
  • Flashlights
  • Working Radio
  • Candles
  • Canned Foods
  • Bottled Water
  • Gas
The day before the storm we go over the list and make sure we have plenty of everything we need.  She also makes sure all the laundry and dishes are done.  Washed, dried, folded and put away.  Then she makes everyone take a bath or shower, cleans the bathtub, and fills it up with water.

Finally, mom gets out a bunch of toys and books and games for us to play, in case the power goes out.  We have our crayons and coloring books, our Twister game, Candyland because my brother is still too young for most board games and even card games, and books to read.

This is my first hurricane and it's really exciting.  I didn't really know what a hurricane was, so I asked Mom and she tried to explain it to me, but I still didn't understand.  So Mom went to Amazon to see if she could find a 'science project' or 'toy' she could get me to help me understand what a hurricane is.  We found this Slinky Science Hurricane Tracker on Amazon.  It's for 1-4 players so I can play with my friends and we can all build our own scale model hurricane.  I'm not sure if my little brother will be able to play it though.  Mom said she might get it for me for Christmas.

I hope I get this for Christmas because it's really cool and I bet it would make a great science project for school too.
